Sven Stears is a multi-grand-slam champion, National Slam Finalist, and performance poet, as well as an artist and filmmaker.
He has a Masters in Creative Writing from the University of Kent, where he wrote his dissertation as a first hand recount of a decade of participating in, and critique of, slam culture in the UK, receiving a distinction upon graduation.
He has toured the UK and Europe, headlining and winning slams across the continent. His heartfelt poetry touches on themes of personal loss, societal trauma, mental health and addiction, but always with little messages of hope.
His debut collection, ‘This is Your Tragic Back Story’ was released in 2021, along with its sister EPs ‘The Wave’ and ‘The Torch’, which are available in Waterstones and on Spotify respectively.
He has run workshops in numerous universities, schools, and youth groups, including Bath Spa and Canterbury Christ Church, and delivered talks on a range of subjects, including the culture of spoken word and slam poetry, and sobriety, a matter close to his heart. He has also mentored a variety of poets personally, helping them to achieve their poetry goals.
As a recording artist, his work has received airtime on national radio stations, and been featured by the BBC multiple times.
As a filmmaker Sven has dedicated his efforts to helping poets create lasting videos to share their own messages. His work has been featured by film festivals all over the world and won several awards.
